Select Apples that are firm - no soft spots or wrinkles. Mild surface blemishes are okay as long as there are no soft spots under them.
Some blemishes occur while the apple is still on the tree as the limbs of the tree rub against the apple under windy conditions. This may not be eye appealing, but the apple is just fine. Some stores will sell limb rubbed apples at a very cheap price. Again as long as the apple is firm, it's fine.
